University of Tras-os-Montes and Alto Douro was born with that status in 1986, although its history builds upon valuable heritage drawn from the old Polytechnic of Vila Real, which was created in 1973 in this city.
This Institute has assumed an important role contributing to regional development. Hence, in September 1979, the Institute has been created University of Tras-os- Montes and Alto Douro, and that less than ten years later, given the universal recognition of its intense activity of the fields of education and scientific research and technology, the Government transformed the University Institute in the University.
Today UTAD is recognized as an important reference point in the Portuguese university system. According to its Statutes, the University, which has as main objectives the Teaching, Research, Extension and Community Support, should be a center of excellence for lifelong learning and the creation, transmission and dissemination of culture, science and technology.
UTAD has its own space within the higher education in Portugal because it contributes to the detected deficiencies regarding courses of national interest are met by choosing areas not yet exhausted on the labor market.
