Cluster Habitat Sustentável organises training session on calculating operational carbon in buildings

On 8 May, Cluster Habitat Sustentável held another webinar as part of the ‘Sustainable Habitat Challenge’ and the PTCentroDiH project, focusing on training for the green and digital transition in the construction sector.

Entitled ‘How to Calculate Operational Carbon in Buildings?’, this webinar brought together experts to discuss methodologies and strategies for calculating and reducing environmental impact throughout the life cycle of buildings.

The event began with an opening session led by Victor Ferreira, President of Cluster Habitat Sustentável, who outlined the importance of the topic in the context of national and European decarbonisation targets.

The panel of speakers included Marisa Almeida, from the CTCV, who discussed the carbon footprint in the operational component of buildings, explaining the different standards and guidelines in force in this area. Next, Ricardo Mateus, from the University of Minho, presented practical methodologies for calculating the operational GWP (Global Warming Potential) of buildings, highlighting critical tools and parameters. Finally, Romeu Vicente, from the University of Aveiro, shared concrete examples and good practices for minimising operational carbon in buildings, demonstrating how intervening in construction solutions can contribute to more sustainable buildings.

The webinar ended with a discussion based on questions posed by the event’s participants, promoting training in this area for professionals, researchers and representatives of the Habitat value chain.
