Umbelino Monteiro is developing an innovation strategy that aims to position ceramic tiles as a material that responds to the challenges of sustainable construction and bioclimatic architecture. Continuous investment in research and development has enabled the Pombal-based company to develop construction systems and products that make buildings sustainable in terms of heat, energy consumption, indoor air quality and roof durability.
For Teresa Monteiro, Managing Director of Umbelino Monteiro, the award of the Sustainability Seal “is a milestone in the company’s history. For many years we have been working in the various dimensions of sustainability: environmental, economic and social. We have made investments with the aim of reducing the impact of industrial activity, with Umbelino Monteiro being the first roof tile manufacturer to have its environmental management system certified; we have invested in research and development with regard to the product and the construction systems it is part of. In this way, we endeavour to reduce the environmental impact of roof tiles, extend their useful life and at the same time develop construction systems that encourage a reduction in energy consumption, helping to increase the sustainability of buildings. This distinction is public recognition of the work carried out and the high standards the company meets in this area.”
Umbelino Monteiro’s aim is to be a sustainable company and, to this end, it publishes annual sustainability reports, uses construction sustainability assessment tools, develops products and services with eco-design criteria based on product life-cycle assessment, actively participates in innovative sustainability-orientated projects and encourages sustainable developments in municipal regulations.
